Set in the Abbey of St. Carta near the town of Biertan, The Nun was filmed in multiple locations across Romania.
Based on true stories, this installment expands the universe of The Conjuring and Annabelle film franchises.
The events of The Nun take place in 1952, where everything began before the previous films.
The story focuses on the origins of Valak, the demonic entity that first appeared in The Conjuring 2.

The Abbey of St. Carta in The Nun
The scenic Corvin Castle, outside the industrial city of Hunedoara, served as the haunted Romanian Abbey of St. Carta.
In real life, this 15th-century Renaissance-style castle seems straight out of a fairy tale and is one of the most picturesque castles in Romania.

The Gothic-Renaissance interior courtyard of Corvin Castle is also featured in The Nun.
This iconic fortress is so popular that it was featured on the cover of the 2013 edition of the Lonely Planet guide to Romania and was selected as one of the country's Seven Wonders.

But, does The Nun abbey exist? The actual Abbey of St. Carta (or Cârța Monastery) is located near the gorgeous city of Sibiu.
This medieval Saxon monastery is unfortunately in ruins today, although its remains are still a magnificent landmark to visit.

The lodging in the convent building was filmed at the Criș Bethlen Castle near Sighișoara.
Situated near the real town of Biertan, this 17th century castle has an imposing circular tower with panoramic views of the surrounding Transylvanian landscape.
The graveyard was a set built for the occasion on the grounds of the Criș Bethlen Castle.
Some of the scenes in the dark corridors and passages of the damned abbey were filmed in the network of tunnels of the old Fort of Mogosoaia (Fortul II Mogoșoaia).
Romania is promoting tourism with new tax rebate incentives for filming, so the film's producers decided to shoot on location in one of our favorite regions in Europe: the mythical Transylvania.

Look at the rose window, the crypt and the church are the same location.
As KFTV.com reported, it is not possible to use a church for filming in Romania, so the chapel was a set built on a soundstage at Castel Film Studios in Bucharest.
Several other interiors were shot here, including the final scenes, which were shot using the water tank facility available at the studios.
Many other productions have used this set, including the Netflix movies A Christmas Prince, set in the fictional Kingdom of Aldovia.

More locations
The interior scenes in the Vatican were filmed in the massive Palace of Parliament in Bucharest.
Built during the communist era under the rule of Nicolae Ceaușescu, its size and scale show the ambitions of the regime, which destroyed a large historic neighborhood to make way for the palace.
This is one of the largest government buildings in the world, but much of it is empty.

The Nun House
Located on the outskirts of Bucharest, the Mogoșoaia Palace doubled as the Saint Vincent's Hospital in London.
Built in the late 17th century, the palace features a harmonious blend of Romanian and Ottoman design elements, set amidst picturesque gardens and a tranquil lake.

The real town of Biertan is a charming medieval village, with one of the most remarkable fortified churches in Transylvania.
However, in the movie, it appears that the main street was filmed in Viscri, also a beautiful postcard Saxon village in the same region, located about 26 miles (42 km) southeast of Sighișoara.
