Why is my spray gun not drawing paint? ›

In most cases, a cleaning problem is involved. If the device has not been properly cleaned, paint residue may get stuck in the ball valves of the plunger pump, or the nozzle may be blocked. As a result, no paint will be drawn in.

A tip that is too small can cause spitting and a tip that is too large can cause uneven coverage. Adjust the pressure: Adjust the pressure on your sprayer to the lowest setting that allows you to achieve the desired spray pattern. Too much pressure can cause spitting.

If your paint gun is not spraying paint at all, it's most likely due to a clog either in the air vent hole or the hose. Clean any dried paint with a toothpick, and use a cleaning solvent to clear any remaining gunk. If you've cleaned your paint gun and find that it still isn't spraying, take a look at the air supply.

If you are using a gravity feed HVLP spray gun and not getting any paint in your pattern this is most likely due to needing to thin your paint, needing a larger fluid nozzle, or needing to use a system that will force the material to the spray gun like a Dekups cup option.

Move your arm while keeping the gun pointed straight at the surface being painted—don't fan the gun, as spraying at an angle can cause an uneven finish.

This can be caused by the air pressure being too weak, which can stop the liquid from atomizing, or due to the liquid being of a type that quickly hardens once in contact with the air. The second form of clogging is due to spray pressure being too high.

My sprayer sprays water but not paint? Debris is caught in the sprayer. Try reversing the spray tip 180 degrees to see is paint can be sprayed. If it can, turn the spray tip back to the spray position to spray.

If this is the issue you experience the most likely cause is that the transducer is worn out. The transducer signals to the airless pump that pressure is needed and signals to run the pump to build pressure. Failure to build pressure often indicates that you need to replace the transducer.

It's possible that bits of the product have hardened onto the nozzle where the spray comes out, says Paul Halter, a sunscreen innovator with Goddess Garden. The best way to fix this is by running the nozzle under warm water until the caked on product is removed.

How do you unclog a spray gun? ›

Remove the air-cap, air nozzle, and fluid needle from the spray gun. Try to clean the fluid passage in the spray gun using a tube brush (one should have come with the spray gun) and lacquer thinner or acetone. Run the brush through the front of the gun as well as the pick-up tube.

Remove the nozzle from the can. Soak it in warm water for about 10 to 15 minutes. Place the aerosol can in warm water for a few minutes to increase the temperature of the paint inside. Warm paint is more likely to flow smoothly and could help unclog the nozzle.

Use a Needle

Both Halter and Poepping recommend trying the warm water method first, but if that doesn't work there's another quick fix you can turn to: Inserting a needle into the release mechanism to physically loosen the clog. "This will often do the trick and get you back spraying happily," Halter says.

If the paint is not atomizing properly, increase the air pressure slightly and make another test pass.
